At this point we've been to SO. MANY. Japanese showrooms for building our house. Kitchens, bathrooms, sinks, interior doors, genkan doors, floors, wall designs, cat stuff! EVERYTHING. Because of the virus we're trying to stay home as much as possible so we thought we'd visit one of the showrooms we haven't been to yet online. Let us know if there are any parts of the house in particular you want to see more of and we'll see if we can film it in person next time!

Not sure if it is still relevant. The least risk of outdating have natural materials stone, wood, Glas, metal. Also lighter material in small spaces. Shiny is not easy to clean, it shows spots and finger marks easy. But most importantly less is more, reuse the same material to have a overall design. Repeat the color and material themes. Use flower, art, blankets, table cloth to decorate. This is easy to change. A stone wall not - a plastered wall can be repainted but removing something that is built in... I recently built a house planed for two years and still there are details I had done in another way. But the simple style with white furniture or wood combined with a wooden floor was a good decision.

Perhaps Rachel didn't know those wood pattern floor in the showroom are actually tiles. They are tiles that have wood designs, easier for maintenance, cost less than real wood, of course, but still give a sense of wooden floor.

Here's a thought.... If you buy a room as a "unit", if anything breaks or cracks, you'll have to replace the entire unit...if you can find anything that fits. If it's constructed as components, you can change each individual unit, like a sink, or shower, etc... Hope that helps.

Try and make a solid house traditionally Japanese houses aren't built to last. I would recommend concrete but, you can still have wood accents. I going to making my house soon as well can't wait. I worked as a construction worker building houses during my college years learned alot.

So interesting seeing how differently homes and interiors are designed and built in Japan as compared to here in the US. I’m from the Midwest too (Chicagoland) and my one comment would be: don’t have real wood floors in the kitchen. That’s mainly because of the likelihood of liquids spilling and ruining the wood. Most kitchens here have tile. Not sure if tile is used a lot there. But I bet that laminate flooring has increased in quality and strength since the one in your apartment kitchen was installed, with the wood look, of course. There’s a lot of upkeep with sanding and refinishing real wood. I’d stick with a higher quality laminate.

Just a tip. I have real wood floors, with the thought that it will be easy to fix. However, with my puking cats and dogs, the acid of the puke destroys the wooden floors. Now I would have wanted tiles that look like wood. These days they have real-looking wood tiles and even in herringbone style, so I would suggest those with cats :3

I hate the way the Japanese homes cookie-cutter "unit-fy" their fittings. I think it contributes greatly to the general fugliness and lack of character / charm to their houses. And this is endemic across the board, not just low-budget houses. But I think they are like that because most people just don't care how they look as long as they are functional. I think now the tides are changing and more people want a customised look to their homes.

The downside to a sliding door in the kitchen is that they are more difficult to open when your hands are full (or messy), which is often the case while cooking. The upside is you're unlikely to bonk your head on a sliding door left open, unlike my dumb cabinet doors at the moment. I have a pretty good bump from one at the moment. But I live in a tiny galley kitchen, in a less claustrophobic space, you're less likely to hit yourself with them.

Don't go for glossy/mirror finish in any cabinet, they're easy to clean but are also smudgy fingerprint magnets; you'd just get annoyed seeing smudges and get further annoyed from cleaning them everyday (think of mirror finish mobile phones) They can also reflect light right into your eyes which is also annoying. Also don't skimp on the space of your toilet, i know space is a premium in Japan but you'll be going there atleast once or twice every day for the rest of your lives and it's better you have a nice, comfortable, relaxing space rather than a cramped space to do your business. Oh and dont put any open shelving in the toilet room; everytime you flush a small amount of bacteria (e.coli) will be sent flying/wafting even when the toilet is covered, which will get onto anything exposed like towels, toilet paper, even your brush on the sink.

First of all: I love watching your house-making videos! I honestly would be super interested in the 200+ door option video, and anything else you can throw at us, and tell us about 😅 Furthermore: I am more then okay that you guys accept so many sponsorships, it's your job and how you make money. I remember in 2010ish when ALfirst got big in Germany everyone was hating on the ALfirstrs who put ads before their videos … I never understood why. This is your job, I think like 2-4 ads and one sponsorship for a 15-20 minute video is more then reasonable. After all: we viewers don't pay anything to watch the videos. So go ahead, make that money, buy the doors :D

Might have to check these out. Thank you for sharing the house building process with us! I experienced this a little bit as my parents built their home in 2004, but it's always interesting to see what exists in other countries, especially Japan (since the bathrooms are so unique). Hopefully you guys don't get too stressed out over it. I hate how many designs feature all white kitchens nowadays. As someone who gets frequent migraines, they are an absolute no-go.

My one tip on flooring is that there is some really nice vinyl plank flooring out there! They look great, not shiny, textured like wood, and are more durable than hardwood as well as waterproof. Cheap laminate is not so nice, which is probably what you’ve encountered, but trust me if you put some more money in there are options that are better than hardwood IMO.

My dad is looking to buy a new house for his retirement one that doesn't have HA since HA you need permission to do anything in your property, which sucks because it feels like you are not the owner. Looking at these is giving me so many ideas. I personally like rustic/Industrial style and my dad also likes a more modern type, so we are both drawn to the natural wood and light colors. Unfortunately, there are not many places here that we can look at. Ikea is definitely a good place to get ideas, but I wish we had more companies.
