Thanks to Native for sponsoring our video and helping us pay for our house! I can't believe it. You guys, we can do like ANYTHING to our yard!! Isn't that insane?! It's so unbelievable to think that it's ours. We were so lucky to find such a peaceful spot and we are so, so grateful we were able to buy it. Life has taken us in directions we never imagined and it's really all thanks to you guys. Thank you so much for helping us get here!
The best days we've had so far this year have just been existing in our yard and listening to the sounds of nature. Each time we've gone back to our apartment with such an incredible feeling of peace and happiness. We can't wait to start planning our garden! Obviously we need to be careful about staying away from where the house will go so we can only plant things in part of our yard for now. Let us know if you have any vegetables/fruit tree suggestions that we should plant! I think we're in hardiness zone 9.

My grandparents have similar kinds of neighbors in japan. A lot of people in the neighborhood are older and they always share extra crops that are leftover after the harvest. They give us peaches, rice, corn, cherries, okra,....the options are really endless. My grandparents rent farm land and receive payments in crops too. Some people simply borrow farm land from my grandparents if they are too poor or facing difficulties in life to pay at all. If they can’t pay for their lights, at least they can have food growing in their backyard🙏

Hi Rachel and Jun - I know you're in the process of having a modern house built (we have enjoyed following your land-buying / house designing journey!), but I wanted to share a channel you might like. Tokyo Llama is an Australian guy who, with his Japanese wife, is refurbishing and modernizing a decades-old traditional-style Japanese house (and GORGEOUS property) that had fallen into heavy disrepair. His videos are so interesting, and along the way he has learned all kinds of building skills he never had before. Plus, he has hired wonderful craftsmen to help custom make and/or restore some things. And he didn't realize it at first, but one of his new neighbors is the man who originally built the house! So he got a lot of valuable help and information there. I really think you'll enjoy his videos.

Those white grubs can be seriously damaging to plants in your garden including vegetables, fruit trees, grass, etc because they feed on the roots of all your plants. This stresses the plant and usually results in the plant not doing the best that it could, such as bearing less fruit or flowers, or even becoming more susceptible to disease. The plants can't thrive if the grubs are there in the ground just eating all their roots :( If you laid down some grass to grow, eventually you will see large brown spots of dead patches of your grass if you have these grubs present. I have this same problem right now after moving into a new house, so I'll be applying beneficial nematodes to take care of the problem naturally.
