We asked Japanese people what they think about current issues. NHK World is conducting a worldwide questionnaire to get an idea of what people think about issues society is facing now and will have to face in the future. NHK World (the international service of the Japanese national broadcasting service) is working with our sustainability-based nonprofit volunteer group, Fukuoka for Sustainability. They've sponsored our group's future activities (generally beach cleanups and sustainability-related events) and we're helping them spread their questionnaire! Hm, some questions are a bit weird, or (understandably) not really all-encompassing/mutually exclusive. The one on compost, for instance-not everyone (even in the US) even has the option to recycle where they live, much less compost. For the question saying "I accept that we immediately prohibit...", the answer choices were really surprising and got me to think outside my typical go-tos, thinking about each one, and even questioning what I even know about some (/why they were listed). There were also at least two questions about work, one without the option to say "I'm not working [unemployed, taking a break]" (which I think should be distinct, depending on context, from something like "I don't work [e.g. student, house spouse, unpaid work]" (though more clearly worded). The "In light of climate disruption, I'm most worried about" question seems to need more answer choices, as well (perhaps severe weather events, diversity loss, harm to others (especially since most of the people answering are probably living in relative privilege and comfort, compared to those more immediately impacted), as a few).

    For the eating meat question, I don't think people need to completely stop eating meat, just simply reduce the amount of meat they eat. As for the breaking the law to protect the environment, I think if someone needs to do that, then that law (or laws) need to be looked at and updated or gotten rid of.

    I think Japanese people are more compliant. I don't see protests or Japanese ppl questioning what the government is doing. I do see that Japan seems to be getting hit really hard with extreme climate weather. But overall, the Japanese are really good at following with recycling when compared to other countries. USA and European countries are actually worse at recycling. Southeast Asia countries are still doing very poorly on recycling due to a lack of education. I see a disaster coming in countries in the South sea. China is still pulling the strings and wants to continue the control on every topic, including building dams to control water flow, building infrastructures for $. Due to COVID, we did see a downward curve in carbon emission. It's a plus for the climate. Nature will fight back if we continue on the path we are on. So, we need to harmonize with nature instead of going against it.

    Love your videos! It was interesting to see them think that the US and other places are ahead of them in terms of how they handle the environment with the example of them not getting reusable bags sooner. As someone living in the US watching y’all’s videos, I deff thought Japan was doing way better because of how intense the garbage system is! You guys have to split it into so many categories to throw it away correctly. Here it’s either 1 or 2 options. Recycle or garbage and you don’t even know what you can recycle but you throw it in anyways 😅. I feel like Japan is extremely conscious of certain things vs the US. I think we are most focused on less plastic in fast food/ stores, efficient cars, minimalism, and animals well beings - that’s why we had the no plastic straw movement lol. I think we lack interest in other ways to help the environment currently

    I have to disagree, I don't feel like anything in America is getting done. It seems like everywhere else is waaay ahead of us. My current job, I work in retail, is big on plastic and they don't always take care of it well as well as I don't feel like they treat their workers, myself included, very well. So I'm hoping for something different. We do have opportunities available in my town I want to try for. Though, I wish I was in Japan because I feel like Canada and Japan are handling things well just by what I've seen. Everyone is quite obnoxious here. I've had customers come in with a respirator masks strapped to their forehead that say "Mind control device" or the people who do wear them have ones that say really obscene things or "this mask is as useless as our government", people are just being ridiculous. I asked a customer to have a mask on, its company policy, and he called me a B***h and said "You can't take away my rights its in the constitution" I have hope that our future will be better, even if it seems rather dark now. There are good and bad sides to the age we live in now versus the years before us. We only have one planet. I wish people in America would be more concerned about it rather than think its one big government joke. It depends on where you are but I feel that in America its not an entirely easy area to live in. I'm sure its the same everywhere but I've only been in the USA all my life. Rent is incredibly high, finding a good well-paying job to live even moderately comfortably is incredibly difficult. I was on my own for 4 years and could hardly support myself on a low-paying job with rent that was close to $600. I want the world to become a better place for the generations before and after me, as well as my generation too. I think we can do this. It may not always be perfect, nothing is, but we could get it pretty dang close:) Stay safe everyone! Thanks for this video Rachel and Jun! 🤍

Older Generations say the younger ones are careless and do nothing. But thats not true. We are saying we want this stuff. Young people invent zero waste stuff. But it cannot be achived in one step. It takes time. And so long young people have to use what is been given by the former Generation. You could say : Its easy to mess up stuff, but it takes a lot of time to clean it up

    It's interesting how nearly all of them mentioned plastic bags when in the grand scheme of things it's a relatively minor issue. I think that says a lot about the amount of awareness about environmental issues in Japan. In America, people also tend to focus on individual consumer behavior instead of more systemic problems like greenhouse gas emissions from industrial production. We've been taught by our capitalist society to think of ourselves as consumers first rather than as citizens.

Of course where I am from it's the same- having more jobs and options, but the living costs, the basic things- food, housing and education, have become so expensive we are practically enslaved to our jobs to afford it now... It's interesting that the people in this video, which may or may not represent the overall Japanese population, have come to the realization that they don't need a lot of crap to survive or be happy. That said, an economy based on consumption cannot survive without consumption. There are already too many people and not enough jobs, and in this Japan can blaze a path forward, or not... BTW isn't a Chinese free environment wonderful? Like Venice, Japan may want to reconsider its relationship with tourism (I read that just 22% of Japanese are now interested in hosting the Olympics). The Chinese and Koreans hate the Japanese anyway, and justifiably so.

Japan has an intense recycling system and America doesn't even have a nationwide one in place. The apartment complex I live at doesn't even offer recycling and trying to find a recycling center or drop off in your city is extremely hard. They definitely don't make it easy to recycle in America and it's a shame. More people would recycle if they made it easier and implemented more recycling areas near homes and workplaces. That being said, major corporations in America are responsible for most of the pollution this country produces and I wish we could have strict laws in place that enforced how these companies recycled and managed their waste.

    Thank you for this video 💪❤️ Are protests not so common in Japan? If yes, why could that be 🤔

    Thank you for this video and the survey awareness. I went through the whole survey. While I want to be better the survey also helped me realize I need more information. 💕 Looking forward to researching and making more impact. -From a fellow Ohioan thank you!

    I saw that question about capitalisn and it made me cringe so much. The only people who bash capitalism are the ones who never had to live in a socialist/communist state. We had it here for 40 years, and know how bad it is.

    I feel like with recycling Japan is doing a better job than America. Yes the rules are strict but it's very organized and allows for multiple uses. Contrary to belief, a lot of plastics in America are actually not recyclable and just get sent to other countries for disposal. (Usually not first world countries and so it ends up devastating the environment there.)

    Every time they said something about "We took too long to start charging for plastic bags", I felt a little pang in my heart.... I live in the midwest US, and I can't escape Walmart without having almost every item I purchase being placed in its own plastic bag if I don't use the self checkout (and reusable bags are temporarily banned due to COVID). People here would throw an absolute fit if stores charged for bags. I guess Aldi gets away with it, but that's part of their whole aesthetic, haha.

    so interesting, as an American, to hear that some Japanese folk think we are doing a better job when it comes to protecting the environment! when in reality, I view the U.S. as being one of the 'developed' countries doing the worst...

    I enjoyed hearing their responses. They all described their feelings in great details, and helped me learn more about other countries change. In America, my state, Oregon, has also only made plastic bags cost more than paper, and I also feel like that’s not enough of a change.

    Hearing people in Japan talk about current issues makes me feel like there's a few things I don't think of to often, like the relief or genuine realization that in person meetings aren't always necessary for work. Or that it might actually be a good, comfortable thing to not go out and buy as much. It's not a hard concept but it's a reminder that we don't need a lot of the things from before.

    Yo it’s crazy that old man thinks the us is doing a better job at caring for our environment when we are clearly not japan does so much more than us. New Zeland even more. I’m trying over here but it hard and our plastic gets dumped onto other counties. That wild.

    I'm glad to see that some Japanese people are worrying about the environment! They do have more types of recycling, but they consume and they single use so much plastic! Over packaging in Japan hurts my heart. (I've been living in Japan for 3 years already, going on my 4th.) After working at 8 high schools in total so far, I've seen so many teachers going to the conbini, eat and just throw their trash in the burnable with the plastic bag they only used once for carrying their lunch from the convenience store to the school. In Japan as well, and they had something about it on TV here, they said that they often see dirty plastic or cardboard in the recycling. When they do, even if it's just one cup in the whole bag, they have to trash everything into the burnables category and can't recycle the whole bag because it's not cost effective (the manager at the recycling center said it'd take too much time to remove every soiled item in every bag, so they don't do it and just throw it with the burnables trash, no recycling there). By the way, they JUST started asking people in Japan to pay for plastic bags everywhere now (and the "My bag" is also becoming a thing more and more advertised in grocery stores)! Like on July 13, 2020 I think. In Canada, for example, people had to start paying for plastic bags and we're encouraged to bring their own bags years ago!
