Oh no! Haku had an allergic reaction :(

3 133 Shikime 314 mijë

Haku had (probably) an allergic reaction. The vet thinks it's likely eosinophilic granuloma complex, based on a biopsy that showed a lot of eosinophils in his skin. EGC is basically an immune system overreaction to an allergen. He's totally okay other than being itchy and a little bald!

In the same time period this was happening my grandma passed away and my brother's cat nearly died from a different disease (was in an animal hospital + vet clinic for a week) soooo that all gave us a pretty real frame of reference for things and we're honestly just really grateful Haku's issue isn't more serious. My brother's cat seems to be getting better as well (thankfully). And I am holding together surprisingly well. 🙃 Things could have been worse. Really relieved they're not. -Rachel

My cat have flee alergy, that was developed by her at her 12th. Years old...but was really frustrating situation. For the diagnose it tooks like 6 months, she has all her neck without hair and without the first skin layer for the scratching...was hospitalized like a month and a half, with a lot of test even an animal dermatologist...the "revolution" and bravecto are know the solution for that situation, we have to be very careful with the dates of administration...sometimes they have one flee and You can't see it. I hope that this testimony works for You and your cat can recovery soon. Best wishes

Sorry for your lost, I had a cat That would lick off her fur everyone she put a paw outside for 2 or 3 years. I went to vet on till I was tired soo home remedies my cat and spray her down with apple cider and she stopped licking off her fur. We know it could be fungus but me nor the doctors are sure. I'm extremely happy

My cat also has that. He's scratching his neck to flesh, that really not nice to see :( For him it's definitively not a food allergy, and for now no other treatment than giving him sometimes steroids when he starts to scratch himself way too much :( Also it took me forever to find a vet' that actually speak about that. All the previous ones just told me to put a cone so he can't scratch his neck...

Look up a condition called “atopy” itchy skin due to allergens in the environment. Also called”pruritus”. A vet in an article in Southern Living magazine Emily Adesso DMV says it is more common in dogs but is because of a weakened skin barrier. It can happen because of pollens, trees, molds, fungi, grasses and dust. Seasonal allergies just like people. There can be supplemental therapy. I hope Haku is better now.

Really glad y'all saved them cats. Been a cat person, don't have my own money nor space to care for em (my fam hates cats and I live with them, course I do I just turned 17). Took in a stray cat that had an ominous bump on her side, and a broken tail. She's fine but she's a stray, because they won't let me take her inside. She lives outside our house now, and since I'm the one who cooks I always leave food out our window for them to eat.

also one of my cats (also a maine coon, which apparently is a breed known for skin problems) was scratching her neck until it was bloody and raw had to get allergy tested. turns out she's just allergic to cat urine (apparently very common for cats!) so i've had to invest in an expensive clumping litter because i have allergy problems too lol! she actually ended up getting so itchy with her scabs she would sit in front of me and let me remove everything that had already peeled off and was just stuck in her fur... i'm not exaggerating when i say she actually enjoyed it. weirdo

A very good friend turned me on to your channel and I have fallen in love with all 5 of you. 6 if you count Picci(sp). You have defined what a cat family ideal is. Despite limited space you have created a cat's dream house. I love how you let them in on the smells, cooking and activities in the house so that boredom in non existent and their need for consistency (ie regurlar feed times) and play times and you include them in all activities show that the rewards of having a cat or 2 or 3 is a joy and facination that they give back to you and each other is so gently and peacefully the Idea of Jackson Galaxy would feature you on a program on how to raise a very happy contented cat. My hat's off to you on your service to cats that are in desperate need if a home. I was so touched by your patience in trapping Picci(sp) sorry-and gradually introducing her to your home. I'm so sorry for the loss of your Grandmother Rachael and Jun. Was she a cat lover as well. You two have such an instinct on how to make a happy cat and a happy new subscriber. I wish you the best on your new home. and wait for more of your videos with anticipation.Ps. your videos of Poki determination to get into the garbage and recycle cans had me laughing so hard as well as his food drive and incredible lust for playing and bouncing off the walls. Rachel, this is wack but my lil fluff was having this same issue! It started when we changed their food cause they (there's three of them) were getting kinda chunky (they were outside/inside cats but our living situation changed so now they're inside constantly) and limiting their food intake wasn't working as well as we hoped (for multiple reasons like not feeding them in separate rooms, leading them to eating the other's food). Willow, the one who was licking off her fur, had never had this issue before, so when your video popped up it made so much sense! We're looking for better food for them now, might just go back to the old one and stay on top of feeding schedules. To make a long story short, your video came just in time for me to find a solution for Willow, I was scared that she'd stay raggedy for a long time until we found a solution ^-^ Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and I hope Haku sees improvement soon!

Cats shouldn't eat cat food period. Regardless of how expensive the prepared and easily stored catfood is, it is not a natural food for our cats or dogs. Cats need to eat primarily 98% meats. And 2% other, which if they were outside, they would find. But usually the "Other" is found in eating animals like mice, and what they have eaten in their digestive systems. House cats are also prone to being highly dehydrated, because drinking water is also not a primary source of their hydration. Typically by eating whole mouse carcasses, skin bones and blood, they get a whole well rounded diet. They would typically round out their diets, with small rabbits, and other types of raw meat they can scavange, or catch themselves. By putting prepared pet food in front of our pets, we have actually created these "Allergies" and other issues, like feline urinary tract infections. On account of the animals are eating unnatural diets. If you balk at the idea of feeding mice, or small rodents, then providing them with the entrails, and chicken meats, is next best thing. I feed my cat and dog Cornish Game hens, and round up their diets, with the Gizards, Hearts and Livers, as extra treat foods. All of these Hens are fed in their raw, store bought condition. They have no issues crunching through the bones, and to dated, seven years on, have very healthy fur, skin, and bones. With no issues, as you have discovered with Haku.

My kitty is on a special diet, too. People normalize that cats throw up all the time, but the vet says that that's a sign of a stomach sensitivity(or allergy). His food went from being $10 for 15.5 pounds, to $60 for 8 pounds... He's only thrown up once so far, though! O.O

My very first cat had this itching allergy when i first got her, all her underside was bald, after taking her to vet and finding out the pippet flea treatment stuff made the allergy worse we changed her flea treatment and found foods which didnt agrivate it, on the vets advice i was told if she started to become extra itchy and started to groom excessivly again then to bath her in cool milk (which i found odd) and then rinse her off with tepid water. which i did end up doing, from that point she only had itchy patchs when the seasons changed. i had her 6 years and before my Ex stole her last year, up until then most of the fur on her underside had grown back except a small plum sized patch which had downy hair. after my Ex stole her i saw her breifly once or twice and she was bald on her underside again -.-' i dont think she will last much longer in this world but theres nothing i can do because he changed all her vet info/microchip info behind my back, ive reported him but due to the pandemic the local animal authorities wont go out and check her.

One way to eliminate the food allergy is to give raw food diet with low allergy chance food source such as rabbit with vegetable and supplement. The commercial brand dry and wet food can have additive even if they are for sensitive stomach or allergy specials. One of my cats suffered from sensitive stomach and have soft stool for almost a year, and I tried so many different commercial brands and their dry, wet, free-dried diet. Now I’m feeding him home made raw food diet with a carefully calculated percentage of everything, and since then, he’s been so much better. I still don’t know what’s exactly caused my cat’s stomach upset, but if the dry food does not give a good performance, try other forms of diet besides the treatment doctors gave, it might worth trying.

Please check chemicals you use at home for cleaning, washing, surfaces, air deodorants etc. and check the litterbox!... Often this is cause number one in cat allergies and no one even thinks about it. Often aromen/perfume/chemicals is added to cat litter which is really bad for cats actually, they breathe it in also while producing dust when using the toilet. Hakus spots are legs and belly which are contact spots to the ground/litter.... maybe his sitting/sleeping places. Plant based litter is the best and it's even compostable. Also you can cook chicken and rice for Haku while he is sensitive or refusing food. Allergy is serious and only finding the cause helps - and removing it. Cats are really good in hiding their suffering but Haku is already showing symptoms... Wish you all the best and recover well, Haku!

She got better within a week and we never had another episode. I usually cook a big pot of it with butter (not oil), a little veggies ( usually spinach) and salt, and freeze the the portion sizes. My cat was allergic to fleas (he liked to escape via tearing through the screens on windows and went into the woods) and it caused him to almost be entirely bald via his neck, torso, abdomen, and legs. He looked so miserable, but the vet gave us some steroids to calm it down. It worked, and I have since then used anti-flea medication to keep the reactions at bay. Some cats are also allergic to dust, similar to humans, and it causes them to itch. Which in turns, tears out their fur.

Haku’s in good company; my cat Squee had a big bald spot on his belly for years before he passed away and the vet thought it was due to something similar. Squish was also a handsome ginger 😀

I don't know if they have these in Japan, but here in Canada we have limited ingredient foods. A lot of cats are allergic to one or more types of meats oddly enough. Male cats are especially susceptible to fish causing urinary infections. My cat doesn't do well with pork or beef for some reason so I avoid food with those ingredients. I also took her off soft food all together as it seemed to be an issue as well. (I suspect Gelatin which is often from pork or beef sources, but I am not entirely sure about that.) I don't know if any of that information is helpful, but I know allergies are always a challenge to figure out the cause of.

Besides food, also consider two other possible routes of exposure to allergens - air and cat litter. Cat litter is really just another oral exposure, though. Some brands don't disclose ingredients (FreshStep) and others make them difficult to find (Arm and Hammer). Arm and Hammer includes guar gum in its mostly clay cat litter - don't know if that is a problem ingredient, but it is not something I expected to find in cat litter. DR Elsey's Ultra lists just clay on the box. Aeroallergens affect many atopic conditions in humans and possibly cats, also. For example, eosiniphilic esophagitis is worsened by exposure to aeroallergens (e.g., pollen). I'm wondering what effect microplastics are having on cats. Cats are often given fleece blankets for bedding, which shed microplastic particles and of course cats are probably ingesting and breathing in microplastic from them. Cats and humans both like fleece blankets because they are soft and warm - but maybe it would be better to switch to cotton flannel.

Poor guy. My mom's cat got fleas once and chewed himself until he was raw and bleeding. Allergies are so rough on them.

I dont know if you have this available in Japan, but I have a product available in Australia called Feliway that releases cat pheromone, similar to the ones that they release when they rub one objects around them. My cat had something very similar looking to Hakus fur and licking behavior as well, once I tried feliway, within the month it was growing back! I think it would be worth some research

I've also been through this journey with my cat and his bald tummy, first the vet suspected allergy, then stress licking, then urinary tract problems, and ringworm :D I hope it's just allergy and Haku will grow back his fur soon ♥

Given that it's seems to mostly be Haku's underside, it might be a contact allergy to a cleaning agent or something that left residue on floors/furniture(like a room spray etc). Food allergies in pets tend to be a full body reaction.

We’ve been dealing with EGC for almost half a year and couldn’t pin it down, our cat licked his belly completely raw. Now he’s on steroids which helped his belly fur grow back, but the vet is pretty sure it’s due to a contact allergy. We think we’ve narrowed it down to the swifter chemicals we use when we mop the floor, so now we use a steam mop and it hasn’t reacted since.

Maybe because of a parfume? A plant? We had it because a cleaning product, rabbit meat and a tick. Maybe Jun was outside with the bike and he was down or sth. else and got one?

My boy Kosmos had had itching & diarrhea for years and I've been trying to get it under control. When I finally found the right food combination that he LIKED and didn't get the poops from, he got diagnosed with Kidney insufficiency. Took me another year to find a new combination. Now he is slowly getting better. I hope you two can find the right food for Haku!

You can use a elizabethan collar instead of a cone of shame. They also come in toast and avocado shape. It won't completely eliminate grooming, but it will decrease it significantly.

Know it’s not the same but my dog had an unknown allergy and is on the same food (dog vers.) as Haku and she’s stopped itching and losing fur!! Also, agree with Haku the food has an odd smell (the dog one at least smells like a beef stock cube). Glad to hear that Haku is feeling/doing better!! Best wishes!!!

TIP 2 of 3 Whenever he is having skin issues you can rub Vaseline on the problem areas. I use the "Original Healing Jelly". It needs to be 100% White Petrolatum. If you use a generic or other brand, then make sure there are no additives or scents in the Inactive Ingredients. He actually loves it so much he'll follow me around the house if I simply open the Vaseline container when it's not for him. This is also safe to use on cats. It will make them look like a little greaseball for a few days, but it heals their problem skin and prevents scratching. It takes care of it in 1 use for our little guy whenever he has a problem. Vets also usually reccomend a glob on their paw to lick up when they need help with hairballs.

We sadly had to go the steroid last resort for some time. But we think we've had a breakthrough reducing soy, yeast, rice, wheat and potatoes (now she just gets those things in small amounts of dry food we give as treats) She is on a light anxiety med to calm the frantic licking and she's coming off the steroid as the fur grows back. (We only found one wet food that worked- The Royal Canin Allergy made her anorexic) I hope something works out for you- sending love

TIP 3 of 3 It's also recommended that you give him a bath about once a month. Although it may be an ordeal the first few times if you didn't start this when he was a kitten. A great shampoo that we've found is "Burt's Bees hypoallergenic shampoo with Shea Butter & Honey". It makes his fur very healthy for quite awhile after his bath. It's very beneficial for cats with pollen allergies and inflammation. They also have cat wet wipes in the same line that do wonders between monthly showers. We'll use them if he starts scratching as a first measure before resorting to the Vaseline, and we also just use them if he gets messy with something we don't want him tracking around the house, lol.
